7 Reasons Why You Should Move to Coventry

Coventry is a city ‘on the up’. It was the City of Culture in 2021-22, it has a range of businesses in the city, and it has good transport connections to London and Birmingham. Furthermore, it has an exciting future, including the development of the city centre south retail scheme and the recently opened water park - The Wave.

This has meant that there is a growing demand for homes in Coventry from people within and outside of the city. This blog post looks at the different reasons why you should move to Coventry.

Coventry Was City of Culture

In 2021-22, Coventry was the City of Culture. This has meant that Coventry was able to invest and improve its infrastructure and arts facilities in the city. This opportunity has boosted the local economy and led to more visitors coming to Coventry, with estimates that the city could benefit from £1 billion from tourists alone. By being the City of Culture, the opportunities are endless. It has led Coventry to experience a growing creative industry, an increasingly diverse nature to the city and more benefits for young people. Coventry really is becoming a city to be recognised!

The Attractions on the Doorstep

Within Coventry, there are numerous historic buildings and attractions which have been redeveloped, notably Coventry Cathedral which was rebuilt in the 1960s after being destroyed in an air raid in World War II.

In 2017 Coventry City Council agreed that 25 historic buildings can be transferred to the Historic Coventry Trust, meaning that previously abandoned and tired looking buildings can be restored to their former glories. This means that Coventry can continue to celebrate its past and create new tourist attractions to bring visitors to the city.

Add to that the different parks and the various other museums, Coventry really is becoming a place where tourists can spend short breaks and where family fun days can happen.

As well as the range of stunning attractions within the city, Coventry also has direct links to the capital and the second city. London is about 1.5 hours away by train, whereas Birmingham can be reached in 20 minutes.

In addition, Coventry is only a short drive away from other tourist spots such as Stratford Upon Avon, Warwick Castle and Kenilworth Castle. This means that by living in Coventry, you can always have something to do on the weekend and be able to explore different towns and cities easily.

The Creation of the National Battery Manufacturing Development Facility

With the development of the new National Battery Manufacturing Development Facility in Coventry, it has been predicted that up to 10,000 new jobs could be created. This could rejuvenate Coventry to becoming a major powerhouse in the UK car production industry.

Andy Williams, the director of business, investment and culture at Coventry City Council, has said that the development could “make the area hugely attractive to investors” as the production of traditional combustion engines slowly declines over the next couple of decades and there becomes a growing demand for electric vehicles.

This could be potentially key for Jaguar Land Rover, who have a site in Coventry, as they look to switch to creating fully electric vehicles by the end of the decade.

The Redevelopment of the City Centre South

City Centre South is a scheme which is looking to redevelop the retail area of the city. The scheme is going to redevelop Hertford Street, The Bull Yard, Shelton Square and City Arcade. Despite several delays and barriers, the scheme has continued to advance, with plans recently being submitted.

The redeveloped areas will create a “dynamic mix of new shops, cafes, restaurants, bars, hotels, leisure options, entertainment and places to live”.

The Olympic Sized Swimming Pool

Another big attraction to moving to Coventry is the range of leisure facilities available, including the 50 metre Swimming Pool in the heart of the city. The swimming pool at the Alan Higgs Centre has a movable floor to make it deeper or more shallow and a pool lift to help those with disabilities.

Also, within the facility, there is state of the art health suite, which includes a sauna, steam room and jacuzzi and a 100 station fitness suite.

Big Events at The Ricoh Arena

As Coventry becomes a growing place for events and attractions due to the City of Culture status, this has led to several big entertainers and events happening at the Ricoh Arena. In recent years, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Pink, and Robbie Williams have all played at the Ricoh and in 2022 The Killers are performing at the venue.

Excellent Choice of Places to Eat & Drink

A final reason to move to Coventry is that the city boasts an impressive range of dining options for its residents. From its impressive eateries in The Cathedral Lanes Shopping Centre in the heart of the city, to famous brands such as Las Iguanas, Cosy Club and Bistro Pierre, Coventry offers options to all taste buds.
